  WATERCOLORS - 1982-1992

Equine Art Gallery

A retrospective covering the last twenty years. When painting horses, I prefer to use only my own photographs for reference, so these paintings are also a diary of my experiences at northern and southern California racetracks.

My techniques and materials have evolved a lot over the past twenty years. In the 1970s and early 1980s, traditional watercolor was my medium of choice. Buyers preferred traditional oil paintings, so I did a lot of those during the '80s. By the end of the 1980s, long term exposure to the solvents used with oil paints had made me very ill, so the 1990s were about learning new techniques using less toxic materials. That's when I started to have fun. I experimented with mixing media, combining ink, gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and pastel. "Whatever works - as long as it's archival" became my motto.

In recent years, light and color have become the most important things in my work. Speed is important, too. These days, I try to complete every painting in one sitting, because I want to finish while it's fresh, and I'm still excited about the subject. I call myself a Daypainter, because after years of investing 40-100 hours in every painting, I now feel no painting should take more than a day.

Most paintings shown here have been sold.
