To me, color is energy and movement, and sometimes the color comes before I even know what the subject will be.

Like in this painting, which began as a broad splash of bright color across the canvas.

I wasn't sure what I was going to paint over it, but whatever it was,

I wanted it to flow with the energy that was already there.

In the image library of the Equine Art Guild, I found some rodeo photos

by a fellow artist that inspired me to paint what you see here.

I tried to leave some of the background showing through on the horse and rider,

so they'd be part of the flow, not pasted on top of it.

Here's how it looked early in the process:
